Checking for Oral Cancer Regularly

Posted April 19, 2016.

Dr. Ghada S. Massabni and her dental team in Woburn, Massachusetts promote ongoing oral cancer awareness for our patients. We very much want to help reduce the number who might fall prey to this deadly disease, a disease which kills people every hour of every day. At Agape Dentist, we aim to detect and diagnose abnormalities in the early stages for the best possible treatment. We offer oral cancer screenings during your routine dental checkups and cleanings at our office, where we use the OralID™ device to detect the early signs of oral cancer.

Since April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, where the dental community comes together to create awareness of oral cancer, we also feel that like breast cancer, oral cancer is most treatable with early detection, and patients can benefit from checking for abnormalities monthly by doing a self-exam. As you do monthly self-checks, you can spot these abnormalities and schedule a visit with our dentist to determine what is happening. It is easy and simple and will only take a few life-saving moments of your time.

What You Should Look For

  • White or red patches in the mouth
  • A sore that bleeds easily and isn’t healing
  • Feeling a mass or lump in your neck
  • An unusual lump or thickening of the oral tissues
  • Having a hard time chewing or swallowing
  • A sore throat or hoarseness that isn’t going away

When you begin your self-exam, make sure to use a bright light and a mirror. Take out dentures if you wear them. Start in the mouth, look and feel the inside of your lips as well as the front of your gums. Tilt your head back to check and feel the roof of your mouth. Then, pull your cheek out, one at a time, to inspect the inside and be sure to check the back of your gums as well. Stick out your tongue and check the top and underside of the surface. And finally, feel both sides of your neck for lumps or swollen lymph nodes, including under your bottom jaw. And that’s it! Just taking this time monthly can go a long way to saving your life.

At Agape Dentist in Woburn Massachusetts, we strive to work with you to help you live a long, healthy life. If you discover abnormalities during your monthly self-exam, please let us know as soon as possible. You can reach Dr. Ghada Massabni’s team at 781.995.4445 today.
